SUMMARY:Optica Rochester Section Annual Dinner Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the annual business meeting and dinner hosted by the Rochester Section of Optica (ROC-Optica) featuring special guest speaker\, AOM president Dr. Jim Burge! \nJim will be giving an invited talk titled\, “Precision measurement of aspheric optical surfaces: a personal journey from university research to industry.” \nAbstract: The manufacture of complex aspheric optical surfaces is limited by the ability to measure them. The mirrors in giant telescopes that are now operational on mountaintops and space were enabled by advances in measurement technology\, including applications of computer-generated holograms (CGHs). These measurement techniques are now used to guide the finishing of a wide range of complex surfaces. This talk follows the story of specialized measurement technologies that grew up as university research to a mature state where they have become commonplace in industry. \nRegistration is open to both members and non-member guests. We hope you’ll join us!

SUMMARY:International Day of Light
DESCRIPTION:Annually observed on May 16th\, the International Day of Light is a global celebration honoring the multifaceted significance of light in science\, culture\, and beyond. From its pivotal role in advancing education and fostering sustainable development to its artistic and technological applications\, light illuminates paths to progress and understanding. This day marks the anniversary of Theodore Maiman’s groundbreaking demonstration of the first functional laser in 1960\, showcasing how scientific breakthroughs can profoundly impact society across various domains\, from communications to healthcare and beyond. Join communities worldwide in commemorating light’s transformative power and its contributions to a brighter\, more interconnected world. \nWe’re proud to be a Diamond Sponsor at the International Day of Light celebration\, on May 19\, 2024\, in Tucson\, Arizona. This free\, annual\, half-day event is hosted at The University of Arizona’s Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium and brings together students\, educators\, and STEM enthusiasts of all ages to connect and learn about the science of light. You can expect free planetarium programs and optics activities for all. We hope you’ll join us!
