The past decades have seen fantastic advancements in optical systems from astronomical telescopes that see to the edge of the universe to virtual reality systems that enable people to experience worlds that never exist. The new optical components and systems have required new ways to measure them. This talk gives a very personal journey into the field of optical engineering\, through some interesting projects\, and into the business world of optical metrology.

DESCRIPTION:Kick off your week with an illuminating talk by Dr. Jim Burge at the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics! \nMonday\, September 8\, 2025\, at 3:30 p.m. EDT\nUniversity of Rochester\, Goergen 101 \nJoin Dr. Burge at the University of Rochester in Goergen 101 or online via Zoom for a presentation titled “Optical Metrology with Computer Generated Holograms: A Legacy of Jim Wyant.” Jim will trace the evolution of computer-generated hologram (CGH) technology\, from Dr. Wyant’s pioneering early work to today’s use in precision optics for everything from space telescopes to mass-produced consumer systems⁠\, offering insights into both historical milestones and modern applications. \nAbstract: Jim Wyant was an early pioneer in the application of computer-generated holograms (CGHs) for measuring aspheric surfaces. Dr. Wyant published the key elements of CGH testing long before manufacturing technology was capable of making useful holograms. Today\, measurements with computer-generated holograms are commonplace\, both for precision optical components like mirrors for space telescopes\, and for volume production of optics for consumer systems.
